Music and outer space are vast and highly unexplored, and the methods for unraveling them are not so ordinary.
For the musician, the constant listening to music from the mostly recent past in order to understand its mystery and logic is not so different from an astronomer looking up at the stars of a distant past amidst a sky of infinite depth in order to understand its same mystery and vastness. Both are working with information from the past in order to put together a map and vocabulary to work with. In fields like those, Its not so easy to understand it when its borders seem limitless and invisible.
The quantum theorist could be as a modern jazz improviser. Both are intensely seeking out worlds highly different from everyday experience, and aiming to bring them into view, and to maybe show them to the world. Einstein’s relativity realities show us glimpses into worlds where time and space are dramatically different and where you are never quite able to know where things are or how fast they are moving. It’s all relative, like music is to our ears. Time and space are to music what water and air are to humans, survival tools.
